The objective of this study was to develop a rapid and effective method of sexing juvenile sea bass with minimum labour and material. To this end, the gonad squash mount technique was applied along with macroscopic techniques for sexing a large number of experimental fish at the age of 215-275 days post fertilization (p.f.). At this age, 90% of the 3894 fish could be unambiguously sexed by macroscopic examination of their gonads, whereas the remaining proportion was identified using squash mount preparations (10%). The accuracy of the observations was measured up to classical histology procedures. Undifferentiated fish accounted for 0.1% of the total population only. The application of the squash mount technique holds out the prospect of considerable... |

L. vannamei postlarvae are normally raised with a protein dense diet (50% protein) rich in fishmeal. Part of the protein is utilized for energy purpose instead of protein synthesis. Based on a previous energy partitioning study, the effects of two isoenergetic compounded feed treatments - animal protein (AP) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (VPC) - upon growth efficiency and energy budget of shrimp postlarvae and early juveniles were determined. Recovered energy (RE) or production (P) after 50 days trial was similar (2 J day(-1)) in both treatments, from PL14 to PL19. However, early juveniles discriminated between animal protein (116 J day(-1)) and vegetable protein and carbohydrates (88 J day(-1)). The difference in respiration indicated a higher... |

In order to study genetic variability for survival during summer mortality events in the oyster Crassostrea gigas, a first generation (G1) was bred in 2001. 17 G1 half-sib families (HSF) were obtained ; each HSF was reared in three sites along the French coast during the summer period. Significant differences in survival were observed among HSF indicating a genetic basis for survival. In 2002, several HSF were selected on their survival performances to constitute a divergent selection (G2) (outbreed and inbred). Significant differences in survival were found among these offspring of the 'high' and 'low' selected groups in several laboratory experiments and in all sites. Growth performance was not influenced by selection on survival. This confirms the... |

This study, carried out from 1995 to 1997, within the framework of "Le Havre" harbour extension project, concerned halieutic populations and the characterization of a coastal nursery in the oriental part of the Seine bay and the Seine estuary . The main objective was to describe the specific and demographic composition of marine populations and their spatio-temporal distribution, and so assess the biological and halieutic role of this area. This study also included a research about the dietary needs of fish juveniles living in the estuary. Autumn and winter surveys results show that the estuary and area under direct influence are the richest from a biological and halieutic point of view. The mouth estuary isthe richest area in terms of diversity of... |

This report is a result of a contract between Ifremer and the French Ministry of Industry. The aim was to map the distribution of the fisheries resources from french scientific surveys. Two areas have been selected: - the "Eastern Channel" area, including 7 administrative departments : Nord, Pas-de-Calais, Somme, Seine-Maritime, Eure, Calvados and Manche. - the "Loire-Gironde" area, including 4 administrative departments : Loire-Atlantique, Vendée, Charente-Maritime and Gironde. |

Recruits of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Linnaeus, 1763), rarely encountered in the field were found co-inhabiting burrows of larger male and female conspecifics in the mangrove forest. They were located in the sediment of the inner walls and burrow plugs. Average carapace width (CW) of the hosting and co-inhabiting crabs was 3.8 ± 0.20 and 0.9 ± 0.03, respectively. As shown by the size-frequency distribution, while most recruits leave the conspecific burrows after reaching 1.0 cm CW, some stay until they reach a size of 2.5 cm CW. The results of this study contribute to a better understanding of recruitment patterns in this ecologically and economically important mangrove crab species. Follow-up studies are however needed to fully determine the role... |

The black-lipped pearl oyster Pinctada margaritifera is of high economic importance in French Polynesia. Arecent decline in pearl value led to the initiation of several genetic breeding programs aiming to improve production traits, including oyster shell growth, which dictates the time of grafting, size of the implanted nuclei, and biomineralization capacities. We assessed shell diameters on hatchery-produced spat to analyze juvenile growth performance of four half-sib families derived from polyandry (one dam crossed with two sires) and polygyny (two dams crossed with one sire) using gametes obtained by thermal shock or gonad scarification. Spat growth was monitored over 3 mo, with shell diameter measured weekly. Results revealed that the spawning method... |

Early-life history of oysters, like in most marine bivalves, is characterized by high fecundity and low survival rate. In hatcheries, which are ecoming more and more important for the production of juveniles for aquaculture production, rearing conditions are optimised (density, feeding, temperature...), and contrast with those observed in the wild. Additionally, slow growing larvae are culled by sieving. |

Ostreid herpesvirus 1 (OsHV-1 μvar) infection has caused significant mortalities in juvenile oysters (Crassostrea gigas). In contrast to the practices of other animal production industries, sick and dead oysters are not separated from live ones and are left to decay in the surrounding environment, with unknown consequences on fluxes of dissolved materials. A laboratory approach was used in this study to test the influence of oyster mortality episode on dissolved inorganic fluxes at the oyster interface, dissociating (i) the effect of viral infection on metabolism of juvenile oysters and (ii) the effect of flesh decomposition on oxygen consumption and nutrient releases at the individual scale. Nine batches of juvenile oysters (Individual Total wet weight... |

Trials on the seabass weaning in atlantic marshes (Roux, 1993), have shown that the use of frozen prey improved this step and reduced his resulting stress. During the present study, which must confirmed these preliminary results, three alimentary sequences were tested. 1) natural zooplankton, weaning pellets, as control, 2) natural zooplankton, inert artemia (intensively produced), weaning pellets, 3) natural zooplankton, natural frozen zooplankton (harvested), weaning pellets. The achieved results show that weaning with intermediary phases (sequences 2 or 3) yield best results. Furthermore the phase with artemia yields, systematically, better results than with harvested zooplankton ; then artemia seems a excellent substitute food representing a... |
